Making Mochi

On Saturday we went to the K Man's school for a special event. We got to make mochi together and then the kids got to eat some and bring some home. The K Man liked it because it was sticky! Basically mochi is often served over New Years or put in nabe pots in the winter. It is made from rice, and you take a bunch of cookied rice, wet it, and hammer it until it forms like a soft dough ball. I love mochi, especially in the husband's traditional white miso soup he makes for New Years day food or in nabe pots. We had a lot of fun at the event. The hammer was quite heavy! After the mochi event, we ate a quick lunch at the mall next door and then attended a kids Christmas orchestra concert at a concert hall in the mall. It was perfect for the kids - just one hour - and they showed each instrument to the kid. My kids loved that they recognized Beethoven's 5th (I think from watching Little Eintein's) and they sang along to the Christmas carols that they played. It was a fun filled Saturday. I really do love exposing our kids to such interesting things, like making mochi and orchestra concerts.
